The Monterey Preventive Medical Clinic has developed a comprehensive
Clinical Weight Loss Program which incorporates both diet and exercise
along with medications to help patients who are overweight or obese
to lose weight and PERMANENTLY maintain their weight loss. This
is not an easy process, and for most people,
requires monthly or bimonthly visits for up to one to two years.
In 1997, Dr. Kryger began diet consultations with patients over
the Internet and via personal telephone discussions. These consultations
are best achieved in conjunction with regular visits to your own
medical professional.
According to Dr. Kryger, "The best weight loss is slow
but
steady, and averages from 4-10 pounds per month. There is no
guarantee, implied or otherwise, that my program will work
for everyone, however, my patients have had good results and
many have lost weight within this range." Dr. Kryger adds: "We
have developed a completely updated and satisfying variation
of the traditional Cabbage Soup Diet plan to assist
our patients in achieving a quick start on their weight loss
program. The patient then goes on to achieve their goal weight
through a combination of lifestyle modification, diet and exercise,
with the assistance of weight loss medications as indicated.
Thereafter, our Practical Guide for weight loss maintenance
and permanent weight loss helps the patient live an active,
enjoyable lifestyle, free from the health risks and emotional
burdens of excess weight.
Most importantly, I use the Dr K's Monterey Diet™ MYSELF,
whenever I need to lose a few extra pounds. In late
April 2001, I realized I had picked up a few extra pounds since
the holidays. I went on DrK's CC Diet® for a week, and
lost SEVEN pounds. There is no question: If this plan didn't
work for me AND for my patients, I would not be promoting it."

II. About Weight Loss Medications
For some obese and overweight patients, medications such as Phentermine,
a non-addictive amphetamine derivative (also sold as "Fastin", "Adipex", "Sanorex" or "Prelu-2")
are used. Sibutramine, a NEW long acting serotonin stimulant, sold
under the name "Meridia", is currently being used with excellent
results for appetite control. "Xenical", a fat absorbing medication,
offers another option for weight loss.

Fenfluramine, which had been used by physicians for over twenty
years, and "Redux", a derivative of fenfluramine, have not been
proven safe or effective, and have been voluntarily removed from
the market.
Some obese patients may require medications called thermogenic
agents which help stimulate their metabolism; these contain both
Caffeine and Ephedrine. Metabolife®, sold over the counter,
is a thermogenic agent, but should be used under a physician's
supervision.
When incorporating medications into your weight loss program,
federal law requires that prescription and usage must be supervised
by a physician. A blood chemistry panel and blood pressure must
be taken before starting the medications, and patients are monitored
regularly while on the program.
III. Weight Loss Medications in Your Diet Program
If you feel you would be benefitted in your efforts to lose weight
by including a weight loss medication in your overall clinical
weight loss program, the Monterey Preventive Medical Clinic is
here to assist you. However, under California law, a personal office
visit is necessary before any medication can be prescribed.

V. A Word About Exercise...
You've probably heard the expression:
If you always do what you've always done,
you'll always get what you've always gotten.
Well, it's true. You may have lost (and found!) thousands of pounds
in your lifetime. But, there is simply no escaping these simple
facts:
- No matter how much you may despise it, the reality is: if you
put food in your mouth, you must move your body.
- No matter how few calories you consume, if you don't
increase — or at least maintain — your metabolism rate
by burning calories, your body will go into "starvation
mode" or reduced metabolic function, and your weight
loss will slow to the point that you become bored and
quit before achieving your goal.
- You MUST EXERCISE, even if it is only walking briskly
for 1/2 hour every day. That simple half hour of increased
movement (on top of limiting your caloric intake) is
all you need to achieve a steady, satisfying weight loss.
If you CANNOT COMMIT to the simple, immutable necessity of changing
your lifestyle, YOU WILL ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU'VE ALWAYS
GOTTEN.
Stand in front of a full length mirror, and ask yourself... it's
Spring 2001:
ARE YOU READY??
Dr.K's Practical
Guide to Permanent Weight Loss can show you the way.
The choice is yours, and...
The Monterey Preventive Medical Clinic is here to help.
Enjoy your life: it is always worth living! — Dr.
A. Kryger
